Owen Suter - Biker extrodinair!Welcome to my JOGLE challenge website my name is Owen Suter and I am attemptng my JOGLE challenge starting the 1st of August 2009 with the aim being to complete the journey in 9 days.

In November 2008 I had a ridiculous idea.........

I had wanted to complete a physical challenge for many years but had always found convenient obstacles to get in the way of completing an event (and the training needed!). First there was Football, then University studies, then a knee reconstruction, then  teacher training etc. Following the tragic loss of my friend Will Nelson I had a rare moment of clarity and resolve in which I decided that in the summer of 2009 I WAS going to complete a challenge for charity in memory of him and no matter what injuries and excuses I inflicted on myself between then and the summer of 2009 that I would take my place at the start line, but what start line........

I had been inspired by Lance Armstrong’s book and fancied taking up cycling ever since picking it up in 2005. After a random chat with my friend Adam Phillip we began to hatch a plan to complete an ‘end to end’, we quickly found two willing accomplices in two other friends Matt Gardener and Sean Masterson. From our HQ (The Pub) we resolved to all buy bikes (none of us owned one!) and take on the ‘end to end’ challenge. .........

At the time I thought we were unhinged as we had no cycling experience between us but in March 2009 the bar was raised when Jason Jump another friend who was serving in Iraq decided that he was going to take up the challenge with even less preparation and no cycling experience.........

This website is my story about my journey from November 2008 to August 9th 2009 .

I have set up this website with 3 main aims:

  1. To help raise money for Helen and Douglas House my supported charity.
  2. To document in full the preparation and completion of my challenge.
  3. To create a resource that future people who take on the ‘End to End’ challenge can use to assist with their planning and completion of their adventure.

Will, Steve and meIn memory of...

I will be undertaking my JOGLE challenge in memory of my good friend Will Nelson. I met Will at Loughborough University whilst studying there and we went on to become friends and live together during our three years at University. Will was tragically killed in August, in the summer of 2008 whilst cycling home in a road accident, at the time he was teaching English in Seoul, South Korea.

Will was a good friend and provided support and motivation when I ruptured my ACL and PCL (Anterior and Posterior Cruciate Ligaments) in my knee whilst playing Football. In order for the operation to be a success and myself to be able to play Sport again I had to complete a vigorous pre-operation rehab plan. Will helped me complete this by being a reliable ‘Gym buddy’ badgering me to go even when I could see little point as having not even had the operation yet I could see little hope or chance of being able to return to an active lifestyle. I feel this is a challenge that Will would tackle with relish and which also encompasses his spirit of travel and exploration.

Nelse you will never be forgotten.
